Sloth Bear Sanctuary in desperate need of conservation - 2

Its not that there haven't been any Sloth Bear conservations earlier. So one cannot give a lame excuse like being the first one or not knowing anything about it yet. Further, if one has to really look forward to the eco tourism part of conservation, the Sloth Bear Resort in the State of Karnataka is quite inspiring.

With the guidance of Late Col. John Wakefield and support from the Government, Jungle Lodge and Resorts have been commendable in preserving and developing various eco tourism site around the State, the flagship resort being the one at River Kabini, a tributary of River Cauvery.

Similar efforts and willingness to provide effective service to the tourist is needed. But the bureaucratic webs and complete indifference and lethargy will surely lead to another wildlife treasure wiped out of the forest map. Act now.

Eco-Tourism ethics from UN

Something to learn from and to apply. Mount Abu is supposedly one of the richest municipalities in the State. And except for tourism it has no other industry to take care of. Then why so much lethargy and indifference??

The resolution on the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism recognized the need to promote the development of sustainable tourism and increase the benefits from tourism for host communities, while maintaining their cultural and environmental integrity and enhancing the protection of ecologically sensitive areas and natural heritages. Likewise, it recognized the need to promote the development of sustainable tourism and address the challenges of climate change and halt the loss of biodiversity.

We, in India need to learn more before calling ourselves developed or the fastest growing economy.

Sloth Bear Sanctuary in desperate need of conservation

Mount Abu might lose one of its natural habitats for Sloth bears if nothing is done at the earliest. Though the Wildlife Sanctuary laws give enough legal protections and leaves ample space for conservation, the ground reality is far from satisfactory. Incidences of bear families wandering in and around residential ares are on a rise which creates more fear and anger on both sides.

On the lines of Tiger Projects across India, Mount Abu should be given its due share and ought to be taken seriously. The Valmiki Tiger Reserve project undertaken by Bihar Government to promote ecotourism is a good example.

Destination 365: Managing tourism seasonality

There is a lot expected from every tourist destination. To attract new customers and further to retain the old ones require constant improvements in infrastructure and new ways of providing world class service to make their visit memorable. Not a tough task if tourism is the only 'industry' in town.

Foreign Tourist Arrivals grow 10.4% during Jan-Nov

The Ministry of Tourism has adopted the Code of Conduct for "Safe & Honourable Tourism" on 01st July, 2010 essentially to strengthen the critical pillar of ‘Suraksha’ (Safety) mentioned in the National Tourism Policy, 2002 and ensure that Indian tourism follows international standards of safe tourism practices, applicable for both tourists and local residents i.e. local people and communities who may be impacted by tourism in some way. The Code has been formed to sensitize travelers and the travel industry, close all possibilities of exploitation, specifically of women and children and to make India a safe & honourable tourism destination.

The initiative was launched by Ministry of Tourism in association with PATA India Chapter, Save the Children – India, United Nations Office on Drugs & Crimes (UNODC) and Equitable Tourism Option (EQUATIONS) for its implementation as it is important and essential to enhance the image of the country and add more value to the ‘Incredible India’ campaign.

Eco tourism is an upcoming tourist segment in India, which will generate wealth for the local people. India with its natural diversity is one of the pristine places in the world for eco tourism. Heritage tourism is also a very lucrative segment in India. India has a rich cultural history and reflection of its glorious past is still visible in its numerous forts, monuments, palaces, places of worship, etc. The states in India also provide a lot of cultural heritage and variety and hence form a key area to cultivate better tourism services.
